Choosing the right bed for your dog comes down to one measurement, plus the way they sleep. A bed that’s too small forces your dog into awkward positions, while one that’s generously sized gives them room to stretch out. Most sizing mistakes happen because owners measure to the tail tip, measure while the dog is curled up, or ignore sleeping style entirely. Here’s the method that works.
How to Measure Your Dog’s Length and Width
Start with a soft fabric tape measure and wait until your dog is relaxed, ideally lying down naturally. The two measurements that matter are length and width.
Measure length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, following along the spine. The base of the tail is where the tail meets the body, not the tip of the tail, which adds inches you don’t need. For width, measure across the widest point of the body, usually shoulder to shoulder or across the chest.
For beds with high walls, bolsters, or cave-like sides, also measure from the floor to the top of the shoulder while your dog is standing. That tells you whether the walls will be tall enough or too low for comfortable resting.
