For voltage, touch the probes across the two points you’re checking, never in series. For resistance and continuity, kill the power and disconnect the part first; a live circuit skews the reading and can damage the meter.
DC Voltage: The Battery Test
Set the dial to V⎓, touch black to the battery’s negative terminal and red to the positive terminal, then read the display. The circuit can be live for this test — voltage is measured across a source, not through it.

Measuring Current: The One Test That Needs A Series Hookup
Current is the exception to everything above. Instead of touching the probes across a source, you open the circuit and make the meter part of the path: power off, break the connection, wire the meter in series with black in COM and red in the amp jack, then restore power and read.
Use the 10A jack for larger loads and the VΩmA jack for small currents, but the labels, fuse limits, and CAT rating printed on your meter’s case set the true limit — check the manual before connecting. The classic error is probing current the way you’d probe voltage, which turns the meter into a short circuit. After any current test, move the red lead back to the VΩ jack, or the next voltage check will read wrong and may blow the meter’s fuse.
