How Does a DTF Printer Work? | From Film to Fabric

A direct-to-film (DTF) printer never touches the shirt. The design lands on a sheet of PET film first — printed in reverse with a white underbase — and only reaches the fabric later, through heat and pressure. Understanding how a DTF printer works comes down to one short chain: print, powder, cure, press, peel.

What Does a DTF Printer Do?

A DTF printer turns digital artwork into a ready-to-press transfer on PET film, which a heat press then bonds to a garment.

The name describes the route exactly: direct-to-film means the print goes onto film, not the shirt. The machine lays down standard CMYK color inks plus a white ink underbase beneath them. That white layer keeps designs fully opaque on black, navy, and other dark shirts; without it, the colors would soak into the fabric and vanish.

This two-stage approach is what separates DTF from direct-to-garment (DTG) printing. DTG feeds an actual shirt into the printer and lays ink straight into the fibers; DTF creates a complete transfer first, then presses it on. Because the transfer is built separately, DTF works on cotton, polyester, and most blends from the same setup — a big reason small shops use it for samples, short runs, and mixed-fabric orders.

The DTF Workflow, Step by Step

Every DTF job follows the same six steps: prepare the artwork, print it on film, powder it, cure it, press it, and peel it.

  1. Prepare the artwork. Build the design with a transparent background and mirror it, because the film gets pressed face-down.
  2. Print the film. The DTF printer lays down CMYK color plus a white underbase onto the PET film.
  3. Apply the powder. While the ink is still wet, hot-melt adhesive powder is spread over the print and the excess is shaken off.
  4. Cure it. Heat melts the adhesive until it turns glossy and sets.
  5. Press it. The cured transfer is positioned on the garment and pressed with a heat press.
  6. Peel it. The carrier film is pulled away, hot or cold depending on the film’s spec. When it works, the film releases cleanly and the design stays on the fabric.
