The Right Way to Collect a Water Sample

Where you dip the vial matters more than most people think. Sampling too close to pool returns, skimmers, or floating chemical dispensers can distort results, while testing stagnant water is equally unreliable.

  • Run the pool pump on high for at least one hour before testing to circulate the water fully.
  • Take the sample at elbow depth, about 12–18 inches below the surface, away from returns and feeders.
