A craft printer can drift far enough from true color that your carefully matched vinyl, cardstock, or transfer paper comes out looking nothing like the screen. When Your Craft Printer Needs Calibration
Calibration compensates for the natural variation between printers and for the way a machine’s output shifts as it ages. Industry guidance from X-Rite, a company that builds color-measurement tools, says to run it after initial printer installation, after a print head replacement, when colors change even though nothing else has, and when you need to align color across several printers.

The Calibration Workflow, Step by Step
Start with the built-in calibration if your printer has one. On many devices the path is Setup > Maintenance > Color calibration > Auto adjust, then confirm with Yes and choose Roll paper or Manual. You can also begin calibration from the front panel or, on network-connected models, the Embedded Web Server.
Use the paper you actually print on. Roll paper must be at least 10.00 in. (254.0 mm) wide; sheets need to be A4 or Letter size or larger. The printer prints a calibration chart, and that chart has to dry before it is scanned and measured.
Some devices use a different menu flow: Machine Status > Tools > Setup & Calibration > Calibration, with choices for Copy Job, Print Job 1, and Print Job 2, then paper supply, target, and Start. Whichever path your model uses, let the chart dry completely, and always check the calibration status before printing your real job.
Environment And Paper: What Breaks The Result
Calibrating in the wrong conditions quietly ruins the result. Keep the room between 59 and 86°F (15 to 30°C) with 40% to 60% humidity; changing temperature or humidity while calibration runs reduces accuracy. Direct sunlight or strong light can prevent correct adjustment, and paper smaller than the minimum size or unsupported media can stop calibration entirely.
If your printer is marketed for craft work and you are still fighting color after calibration, the issue may be the profile rather than the machine. An ICC profile is created from measured data; calibration adjusts the device toward a known state. They are not interchangeable — both matter.
