Place a tomato cage immediately after planting while the seedling is small, centering it over the plant and pressing it firmly into the soil.

Caged plants need more elbow room than staked ones since the foliage grows freely inside the wire. Use the wider end of that range for large indeterminate types.
As the plant grows, tuck stems back inside the cage every week or so. Tie branches loosely only when they flop outward — a snug knot cuts into the stem as it thickens. The cage should do the heavy lifting, not your twine.
Match the cage to the plant’s mature size. A too-small cage turns into a leaning tower of fruit by August.
