The secret is understanding one thing: container roots need air and drainage far more than they need dense, rich earth. The Simple DIY Potting Soil Formula
You don’t need a dozen ingredients. The reliable backbone of a good container mix combines three things by volume — not by weight: something that holds moisture, something that creates air pockets, and something organic that feeds the plants.
Purdue Extension offers two proven formulas. The first is 1/3 soil, 1/3 organic matter (like compost), and 1/3 vermiculite or perlite; the second is 1/2 peat moss with 1/2 vermiculite, plus added limestone, superphosphate, and fertilizer. The University of Georgia CAES suggests a similar route with 2 parts soil, 2 parts peat moss, and 1 part perlite.
The most forgiving recipe for beginners is this:
- 1 part compost for moisture and nutrients
- 1 part coir or peat moss to hold water
- 1 part perlite or vermiculite for drainage and air space

Can You Use Garden Soil or Topsoil in Containers?
Skip it for standard pots. Garden soil and topsoil are dense; in a confined container they compact quickly, hold too much water, and suffocate roots. Extension sources are clear: use a potting mix or soilless medium instead.
There’s one exception. The University of Maryland Extension says topsoil can be added to very large containers, as long as it doesn’t exceed 5–10% of the total volume. “Very large” here means big raised beds, not a standard patio pot or window box.

- Leave headroom. Fill pots to within about 2 inches of the top so water has room to soak in.
- Pre-wet the root ball. Thoroughly wet roots before transplanting, and set them shallowly, not deep.
