  • Clear the bed. Remove weeds, stones, clods, and plant debris. The soil surface must be smooth so the plastic contacts it evenly—any air pockets and debris leave untreated pockets where pests survive.
  • Moisten the soil deeply. Irrigate to a substantial depth before laying plastic. Wet soil conducts heat dramatically better than dry soil, and this step is essential for success. The soil should be at planting moisture, not soggy.
  • Level and rake. Break up clods and smooth the surface so the plastic lies flat against the soil across the entire bed.
