Getting solar post cap lights onto a deck or fence post is a straightforward job that almost anyone can handle, but skipping one small step — like leaving a plastic pull tab in place — is why so many of these lights never turn on. Here’s the order that works: confirm the fit, activate the battery, orient the panel, and secure the cap. Wiring, screw placement, and charging times vary between models, so the exact moves differ, but the sequence stays the same.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather the light, the post, and a few basics before you climb a ladder. Most installations use the screws or adhesive supplied in the box, so new hardware is rarely required.

• Correct cap size: Match the cap to your post. 4×4 nominal posts are the standard, and some caps include a 3.5″x3.5″ base adaptor to bridge a smaller sleeve. Trex composite posts need a cap sized for those sleeves.
• Battery access: A screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
• Adhesive option: Exterior-grade silicone for caps that glue on instead of screwing.

Activating the Battery Comes Before Mounting

Nearly every solar cap ships with the battery disconnected, and that connection is the most common failure point. Do this step on the ground, not after the cap is already on the post.

Find the battery compartment, typically under the top plate or on the underside. Remove the plastic tab that keeps the battery disconnected, or install the batteries if they are not factory-fitted. Some models use a pull tab that emerges from the bottom, like the Tractor Supply CH2233, which directs you to pull the plastic tab out before mounting. Reinstall any cover you removed, then check for a switch; a cap with an auto-off switch goes to auto before you set it in place.

The Right Order for Fitting and Securing the Cap

Test the cap on the post before you commit to screws or silicone. A cap that fits poorly now will only get harder to fix once adhesive sets.

Place the cap on the post and check the fit. A tight composite sleeve needs light sanding, not force. Once the fit is right, secure it: use the two mounting screws provided for most metal caps, or run a bead of exterior-grade silicone around the underside and press the cap firmly onto the post, per Lowe’s installation sheet.

The solar panel needs southern exposure to do its job. If your cap has a visible panel, face it toward the sun’s path, and keep all caps on the same post row oriented the same direction for a uniform look and even charging.

Why Won’t My New Solar Post Cap Light Turn On?

If the light stays dark after installation, the cause is almost always one of three things: the battery was never activated, the switch was left off, or the battery simply hasn’t charged yet. A battery fresh from the box holds very little charge.
