NDSU also advises not to plant earlier than five days before your average last killing frost or projected last frost date. Frost will kill young soybean plants outright, so check your local frost calendar before you even till.
Here’s the test: dig down two inches, grab a handful of soil, and see if it feels cool or warm. If it’s cold to the touch, wait a few more days.
How Deep To Plant Soybean Seeds
Depth is the other critical number, and different states give slightly different ranges. The consistent guidance across the board is 1 to 1.5 inches.
- Oklahoma State: plant 1 to 1.5 inches deep.
- NC State: about 0.75 to 1.25 inches deep.
- Iowa State: 1 to 1.5 inches deep, and never deeper than 2 inches.
- Missouri: never deeper than 2.5 inches.
The common thread is clear: 1 to 1.5 inches works for most conditions, and anything past 2 inches risks a poor stand. When you find the right soybean seeds for your home garden, matching these depth rules is what gets them off to a strong start.
There are a few exceptions to the standard depth. Deeper planting sometimes works for late planting, coarse sandy soils, or dry conditions where you’re chasing moisture. Shallower planting suits early planting, fine-textured soils, and high-residue no-till ground where the seed needs to stay near the surface to reach warmth. If you’re not sure, stick with the middle of the range.
Moisture And Seedbed Preparation
Warmth and depth only work if the soil is moist where the seed lands. Michigan State says the seed should sit in at least 0.5 inch of moist soil, and NDSU says the same thing in different words: put the seed in moist soil and cover it 1 to 1.5 inches deep.
That means you’re not just checking the surface. The seed needs moisture at its actual depth, not a damp crust on top. If the soil is dry an inch down, water before planting or wait for rain.
Oklahoma State’s production guide describes the ideal seedbed as moist, warm (68°F to 86°F), and firm. Good seed-to-soil contact matters because the seed draws water directly from the surrounding soil; air pockets around the seed slow germination and can dry it out.
A firm seedbed also protects against soil crusting, which can block the emerging sprout. If your soil crusts after a hard rain, a light drag or careful shallow cultivation before emergence helps.
Spacing, Inoculation, And Common Mistakes
Extension sources focus mostly on field-scale agronomy, so home-garden spacing guidance is thinner. One general gardening source suggests rows 24 to 30 inches apart with 1 to 2 inches between seeds, but treat that as a starting point. If you’re growing a small patch, you have room to experiment; just give each plant enough space to develop a full canopy.
One thing worth checking before you plant is whether your soil needs rhizobium inoculation. Soybeans form a partnership with these bacteria to fix nitrogen from the air, and if your ground hasn’t grown soybeans in recent years, the bacteria may be absent. Your local university extension office can tell you whether inoculation is recommended for your area, and it’s a cheap step that often pays off. Skip this only if you know your soil already has a healthy population.
