Temperature: The First Job an Incubator Does
The most critical task an egg incubator performs is keeping eggs at a constant temperature. Embryos develop only within a narrow range, and even small swings can cause problems.
Where you measure temperature matters by incubator type. Still-air incubators, which lack a fan, need 101°F–102°F measured at the top of the egg. Forced-air models, which circulate air with a fan, target 99.5°F at egg level.
Don’t trust the display right away. The manual for that model recommends running the unit for at least 12 hours first, just to confirm the temperature holds steady before any eggs go inside.
Humidity and Ventilation: Regulating Moisture and Air
An egg incubator juggles two competing needs: keeping moisture inside the unit while still letting fresh air in. Both are essential, and getting either wrong leads to failed hatches.
For most of incubation, aim for 50%–60% humidity. During the final three days, raise it to 65%–75% to soften the shell for hatching. Water troughs or pans in the incubator’s base supply the moisture—you simply add water and monitor the display or a separate hygrometer.
Ventilation is just as important. Eggs need oxygen and must shed carbon dioxide, so incubators have vents or airflow openings. Open them enough to allow fresh air exchange without letting all your humidity escape.
If humidity runs too dry, chicks can get “shrink wrapped” inside the shell, stuck and unable to break free. Too much moisture leaves chicks with insufficient air space and can drown them at hatch. Measure, don’t guess.
Turning: Why Eggs Must Move
An egg incubator also turns the eggs, mimicking the hen’s instinct to roll them. Without turning, embryos stick to the shell membranes and die.
Automatic turners handle this for you, but you’ll still load eggs correctly: place them small end down. If you’re turning by hand, mark one side with an “x” and the other with an “o,” then turn at least three times a day until the final days of incubation.
Stop turning around day 17 for chickens. This lets the chick position itself for hatching, a step you don’t want to interrupt.

Opening the lid too soon. During hatch, the lid must stay shut. Opening it drops humidity and can shrink-wrap the chicks in their shells. Wait until they’re fully out and fluffed.
Using the wrong temperature reference. Still-air and forced-air incubators measure at different points—the top of the egg versus egg level. Follow your model’s instructions, not a generic chart.
Impatience with stabilization. Adding eggs before the unit has run 12 hours invites temperature dips you can’t recover from. Let it stabilize first.
