Riding an e-bike carries real risks, and they’re not the ones most riders expect. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates emergency-department-treated e-bike injuries climbed from roughly 3,500 in 2017 to around 24,400 in 2022 — a nearly sevenfold jump. The dangers fall into two broad categories: crash-related injuries from speed and traffic, and fire hazards tied to lithium-ion batteries. Understanding these risks matters more than fearing them, because the precautions that prevent most problems are straightforward and well documented.
Why Crashes Are More Dangerous On An E-Bike
The core danger of an e-bike is speed. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) notes that higher speeds reduce reaction time, giving riders less opportunity to brake, swerve, or avoid hazards. When a crash happens at 20 mph instead of 10 mph, the impact energy quadruples, which means more severe injuries.
CPSC data confirms that most e-bike fatalities it reviewed involved collisions with motor vehicles. Other causes included crashes with pedestrians, fixed objects, falls, loss of control, and rider ejection. These aren’t random events — they follow patterns riders can guard against.

CPSC reported at least 208 micromobility fire or overheating incidents across 39 states between January 2021 and November 2022, causing at least 19 deaths and 22 injuries. Three of those deaths and 10 injuries involved e-bikes specifically.
The numbers get worse at the city level. The ACS reports that in 2023 New York City alone experienced 267 lithium-ion battery fires, causing 150 injuries and 18 deaths across all lithium-ion battery incidents. And the problem persists:

Charging Safety Rules That Prevent Fires
Most e-bike battery fires trace back to charging habits, not the bike itself. CPSC’s guidance is clear and easy to follow:
- Never charge while sleeping — always be present when the battery is charging.
- Use only the supplied charger that came with your e-bike.
- Use only an approved replacement battery pack from the manufacturer.
- Never use a battery modified or reworked by anyone who isn’t a qualified technician.
- Dispose of damaged batteries properly — never throw them in the trash or regular recycling; use a battery recycler or hazardous-waste collection center.
A battery that’s swollen, hot to the touch, or making odd sounds needs immediate attention — stop using it and contact the manufacturer. Riding Safety: The Precautions That Prevent Injuries
Battery safety handles the fire risk, but crash prevention comes down to equipment and riding habits. CPSC recommends wearing a bicycle helmet and inspecting your bike before every ride.
That pre-ride check should cover handlebars, brakes, throttle, bell, lights, tires, cables, and the frame. Loose brake cables or under-inflated tires matter more on an e-bike because of the extra speed and weight. The ACS echoes this guidance, recommending helmet use and defensive riding — assuming drivers may not see you and riding accordingly.
Mechanical failures aren’t rare edge cases. CPSC notes that e-bike hazards extend beyond fires, identifying mechanical hazards and control issues as major contributors to injuries and deaths. A throttle that sticks or brakes that fade at speed create dangerous situations that a quick pre-ride inspection would catch.
