How to Apply Behr Solid Deck Stain | A Clean, Even Finish

A solid deck stain covers wood grain with a uniform film, protecting the surface while hiding wear. The key is clean, dry wood applied in even, thin coats.

Applying BEHR PREMIUM® Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is a straightforward weekend job that protects your deck for years. The entire process comes down to three things: a clean surface, a dry surface, and even application technique. Skip any one of those, and you’ll see blotching, peeling, or lap marks that are hard to fix later. For the full rundown on which products are worth your money, see our roundup of the best deck solid stain options this year.

Here’s everything you need to know, straight from BEHR’s own guidance.

Prep the Deck For Staining

A solid stain works best on fresh, clean, bare wood that has never been sealed. Begin by clearing the deck of all furniture, planters, and debris, then sweep the surface thoroughly.

Wash the wood using a deck cleaner like BEHR PREMIUM® All-in-One Wood Cleaner. Scrub the solution into the grain, rinse the deck completely, and let it dry. This drying step is where most people rush — BEHR recommends allowing about 24 hours of dry time before you stain, and the surface must be completely dry before any stain touches it.

If the wood is showing its age, consider sanding lightly to smooth splinters and open the grain.

Choose the Right Tools For Application

The tools you choose will shape the finish. BEHR lists four solid options that each work well:

  • 3/8-inch nap roller — ideal for large, open areas.
  • Nylon/polyester brush — best for cutting in edges and corners.
  • Pad applicator — great for smooth, even coverage.
  • Airless sprayer — speediest route; use a.015–.019 inch tip with a 60 mesh filter.

Whichever tool leads, back-brushing (running a brush over the wet stain) helps push the finish into the wood and works out any air bubbles.

Apply Behr Solid Deck Stain

Work in two or three boards at a time, applying the stain evenly in the direction of the wood grain, end to end. This board-by-board rhythm is what prevents the visible overlap streaks called lap marks. The temperature should sit between 35–90°F, and stay above 35°F for the 12 hours after application. Skip days with direct sun or hot surfaces — heat makes the stain dry too fast and leaves brush marks.

Always maintain a wet edge, meaning you keep the stain wet at the edge where you’re working so the next pass blends in seamlessly. Remove any puddling or excess as you go — a solid stain that pools dries uneven and peels prematurely.

Property Behr Solid Stain Notes
Coverage (1st coat) 200–400 sq ft Varies with wood porosity
Coverage (2nd coat) 400–800 sq ft Second coat is thinner
Recoat time 1–2 hours Only if a second coat is needed
Rain resistant 4 hours Full cure takes longer
Light foot traffic 24–48 hours Keep furniture off until then
Full cure 72 hours Before heavy use
Temperature range 35–90°F Above 35°F for 12 hours after

BEHR recommends two thin coats over one thick one. Allow the first coat to dry for 1–2 hours, then check the dry time by touching an inconspicuous spot. If it’s dry to the touch, apply the second coat. This doubling-up approach gives a more uniform film and better protection. A second coat is needed if the first looks patchy or uneven.

That durability is exactly why the prep steps matter. You do not need a primer on most woods. BEHR’s deck-staining guidance confirms no separate primer step is required for standard decking.

If the stain is too thick to work with smoothly, you can thin it with water at no more than 1/2 pint per gallon.

Drying, Curing, and Maintenance

Once your final coat is on, the wait time is the hardest part. The stain resists rain after about 4 hours, but that’s not the same as being cured. Wait a full 24–48 hours before letting light foot traffic across the surface, and keep furniture and planters off for a full 72 hours — that’s how long BEHR lists for complete cure. Move planters too early and you’ll see permanent impressions in the finish.

Small touch-ups are easy: clean the spot, let it dry, and apply a fresh coat of the same product.
