Scanning film negatives requires a scanner with a built-in transparency adapter or film holder, plus software set to a negative-film mode.

Regular flatbed scanners only see reflected light, which is why a negative held on the glass alone comes out blank or produces a reversed, blue-tinted mess. The right equipment and a few settings change that, and the process for getting clean digital copies of your old film rolls is more straightforward than most people expect.

Knowing how to scan negatives with a scanner comes down to three things: confirming your model supports film, loading the strip with the correct side facing the sensor, and picking the right software mode. Do You Need a Special Scanner for Negatives?

Yes. A scanner without a transparency unit, film holder, or negative-support mode will not work for negatives, regardless of the software you use. The scanner’s sensor must shine light through the film rather than reflect light off it, which is a capability limited to specific models.

Compatibility is model-specific, so check your scanner’s documentation before assuming it will work. Many HP and Epson flatbed models include a built-in transparency adapter, often hidden in the lid or stored inside the scan bed itself. If your scanner lacks this hardware, you would need a dedicated film scanner or a digital negative scanner to get the job done.

How Do You Load a Negative Strip Correctly?

Loading the strip with the wrong side facing the sensor is the most common error, and it produces scans that are blurry or hopelessly out of focus. The shiny side of the film — the emulsion side — should face the scanner’s light source as directed by the holder.

HP documents that the shiny side should face you when you place the strip into its holders. For the HP Scanjet G3010, the negative strip holder is stored inside the slide holder, which sits within the built-in transparent materials adapter (TMA). Slide the strip in so the shiny side faces you, then reinsert the holder into the adapter.

For the HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart, remove the negative holder from the slide holder first. Place one or both negative strips in so the shiny side faces you, then close the Photo Door. This model also has a dedicated “Scan Slides or Negatives” button, which simplifies the process considerably.

HP warns that negatives are easily damaged, and you should touch them only on their edges.

What Settings Should You Use in the Scanning Software?

Professional Mode, not the automatic or full-auto setting, is the only reliable way to scan negatives on most Epson scanners. The automatic mode cannot handle the tonal inversion that negative film requires.

Epson’s official workflow for the Perfection V100 Photo, Perfection 4990 Photo, and Perfection V500 Photo models follows this sequence:

  • Place the 35 mm slide or negative about 1/4 inch from the edge of the scanner glass
  • Open Epson Scan and choose Professional Mode
  • Select the Document Source and Image Type to match your film
  • Uncheck Thumbnail so you get the full preview
  • Click Preview and wait for the scan bed to complete its pass
  • Crop with the marquee tool to select only your frames
  • Click Zoom for a closer look, then scan

The Perfection 2400 Photo supports 35 mm slides, negatives, and film strips, and it can handle color negatives, color positives, and monochrome film. Note that Full Auto mode does not support monochrome film on this model, so switch to Professional Mode for black-and-white rolls.

Epson Scan 2, which is free from Epson’s support pages, follows the same logic for newer models like the Perfection V850 Pro. Select Professional Mode, set the Document Type as Film (with Film Holder), then choose Color Negative Film or B&W Negative Film. Preview first, select your frames, and adjust exposure or color as needed before the final scan.

One important note on resolution: Epson’s FAQ lists 72 dpi only for a quick test scan to check positioning. That is not a final-quality setting — for actual prints or archival copies, set the resolution much higher, typically 1200 dpi or above, to capture the detail in the film grain.

Scanning Without a Transparency Adapter

If your scanner lacks a transparency unit, there is no software trick that will rescue the hardware limitation. The scanner cannot light the film from behind, so it will never produce a usable negative scan regardless of the settings you choose.
