What Are The Two Ends Of A Quickdraw Actually For?

The rope end is typically a bent-gate carabiner. A bent gate curves outward, creating a wider opening and a natural shelf for your thumb and fingers to push against, so you can clip the rope with one motion while hanging off a hold. The bolt end is typically a straight-gate carabiner, which is less snag-prone against rock and bolt hangers and generally stronger in the orientation it actually sees.

Gate style is a tradeoff, not a ranking. Solid straight and bent gates are the traditional sport-climbing choice. Wiregates save weight and reduce gate flutter, but a wiregate on the rope end doesn’t have the same thumb-friendly shelf that makes bent gates quick to clip. Many quickdraws deliberately mix gates: bent on the rope end, straight or wire on the bolt end.

Those numbers describe a normal, properly loaded carabiner. Nothing about a wider gate or a nicer shape changes what the carabiner can survive in the wrong orientation.

The Three Details That Cause Most Quickdraw Mistakes

Nearly every quickdraw problem traces back to orientation, not to the gear failing. The carabiners are strong; the error is in how they’re loaded.

  • Rope in the bolt end. The rope belongs in the rope-side carabiner, the one with the bent gate and the keeper. Clipping the bolt end looks normal but puts the load where it isn’t meant to go.
  • Treating the keeper as a safety device. The rubber retainer keeps orientation; it does not correct a bad clip. It also shouldn’t be used on an open sling.
  • Ignoring the anchor-end mobility rule. Petzl specifies a mobile anchor-end carabiner with no STRING there, which is the opposite of what looks “more protected.”
