Building A Garden Chair With Simple Joinery

Step 3: Connect The Side Frames With Front And Rear Seat Rails
Stand the two sides upright and space them so the front seat rail fits between them. Clamp the front rail first, then the rear rail.
- Attach the front seat rail flush with the top of the side seat rails.
- Attach the rear seat rail lower by the same amount you dropped the side rails (about 3/4 inch).
- Measure corner-to-corner diagonals across the seat frame. Adjust until both diagonals match, then drive the remaining screws.
That diagonal check is your best friend. When the seat frame is square, the chair sits square.
Step 4: Add The Lower Front Stretcher For Stiffness
Mount the lower front stretcher between the side stretchers. Keep it level and centered. This piece stops the chair from flexing when you push back with your feet.
Step 5: Set The Back Lean

- Clamp the back top rail across the two back legs, about 30–31 inches from the floor.
- Lean that rail back until the top edge sits about 3 inches behind the rear seat rail.
- Mark the rail position on each back leg.

Step 6: Install Seat Slats With Drainage Gaps
Seat slats should never be jammed tight. Leave gaps so water drains and the wood has room to move.
- Start with the front slat flush to the front seat rail.
- Use a spacer (a 3/8 inch scrap) between slats.
- Pre-drill each slat end, then drive two screws into each rail.
- Keep screw rows straight for a clean look.

Step 7: Install Back Slats And The Top Rail
Back slats attach to the cleats/uprights you mounted on the back legs. Start in the center and work out to keep spacing even.

- Mount the center slat first, then add slats left and right.
