- Cubic feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
The only trick is depth. Beds are often measured in inches, so you’ll convert inches to feet before you multiply.
Step 1: Measure length and width in feet
Use a tape measure and record the inside fill area, not the outer frame. If your bed has thick boards, measure the open space where soil will sit.

Step 2: Convert depth into feet
Depth in feet is inches ÷ 12. A few common depths:
