One wrong assumption about these two devices has ruined more than a few European vacations. Packing the wrong one can leave electronics dead — or smoking. The core rule is easy once you know how to read a device’s label. Here’s what each does and which one you actually need.
What a Plug Adapter Does (and Doesn’t Do)
A plug adapter changes only the physical shape of your device’s prongs so they fit a foreign wall outlet. It does not alter the electrical current flowing through it. Continental Europe uses outlets with two round pins; the United Kingdom uses three rectangular pins. A travel adapter simply bridges that shape difference.
Adapters are small, lightweight, and inexpensive — typically under $15. They handle no electrical conversion whatsoever. If you plug a U.S. device into a European outlet using only an adapter and that device cannot handle 220–240V, you risk damaging the device or creating a fire hazard.
What a Voltage Converter Does
A voltage converter changes the electrical voltage from one range to another — typically stepping 220–240V European mains down to 110–120V for U.S. devices, or stepping up in the opposite direction. Converters are necessary only for devices that are not dual-voltage.
Converters are bulky, heavy, and significantly more expensive than adapters — often $30 to $60 or more. They also come in two types: step-down converters (for using U.S. devices abroad) and step-up converters (for using foreign devices in the U.S.). Most travelers need only a step-down converter, and only for specific appliances.
How to Know Which One You Need
The answer lives on the device or its charger. Look for a label marked “Input Voltage” or “AC Input.”
- If it says 100–240V, 110–240V, or 100–240V~ 50/60Hz: The device is dual-voltage. You need only a plug adapter for the outlet shape of your destination.
- If it says only 110V, 120V, or another single number: The device is single-voltage. You need a voltage converter — or leave the device at home and buy a local version.
This rule covers nearly all modern phone chargers, laptop power bricks, camera chargers, and USB wall adapters. The common exceptions are older hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers, and other heat-producing or motor-driven appliances. Many of these are single-voltage and will burn out on European current.
The One Common Mistake That Causes Problems
Travelers frequently assume an adapter alone makes their device safe to plug in. An adapter changes nothing about electricity — a single-voltage device plugged into 220V through an adapter receives 220V and can fail catastrophically. A converter changes voltage, but you only need it when the device label says so. The money mistake is buying a heavy, expensive converter when your devices are already dual-voltage and only need a $10 adapter.

Can I use a U.S. hair dryer in Europe with just a plug adapter?
