Price only narrows the list; those five pick the winner.
Comparing Dive Computers: Five Specs That Decide The Fit
Algorithm, air integration, gas support, depth rating, and battery tell you more than the sticker price, and each one rules out a different set of buyers.
- Algorithm. Bühlmann ZHL-16C with gradient factors dominates premium models from Shearwater, Garmin, and Aqualung. Suunto uses its RGBM on entry units and Bühlmann 16 GF on the Ocean; Scubapro runs its own Galileo algorithm.
- Air integration. Tank pressure on the screen is available on the Shearwater Teric and Perdix AI, Garmin Descent Mk3i, Suunto Ocean and D5, and Scubapro G2 — but only with a paired, compatible transmitter. The Suunto Zoop Novo, Mares Puck Pro+, Shearwater Peregrine, Garmin Descent G1, and Aqualung i330R have none.
- Gas support. Entry units handle one gas, mid-range units manage two or three nitrox mixes, and technical models reach five or more, plus trimix and CCR modes.
- Depth rating. This is a ceiling, not a skill level. Recreational units commonly show 60–120 m; technical units show 150–200 m.
