Espresso baskets come in three doses and two wall types; match the diameter to your portafilter first.

Most espresso problems trace back to one quiet culprit: the basket. It decides how water meets the coffee, and its dose, wall design, and diameter shape every shot. Sort out espresso basket types — single, double, or triple; single-wall or double-wall; 51 mm or 58 mm — and much of the shot-pulling guesswork disappears. Single, Double, And Triple Dose Baskets

Basket size is measured by dose: the grams of ground coffee the basket is built to hold. Nearly every basket line comes in three sizes.

  • Single baskets (about 7–10 g). Meant for one shot but less common in specialty setups, because less coffee means small grind or tamp errors show up faster. Singles are genuinely harder to dial in consistently.
  • Double baskets (about 14–20 g). The standard home and cafe choice, with 18 g acting as the de facto specialty default.
