You size the parts to your space, assemble the frame, and finish it before it goes back in. The payoff is storage that actually fits your footwear instead of forcing it.
Measure Your Closet Space First
Skip this step and you’ll likely end up with a rack that’s too wide for the opening or shelves too shallow for your shoes. Start by measuring the width of the closet shelf or floor area where the rack will sit, plus the height of the space above it.
You also need to know what you’re storing. A shelf spacing that works for flats will fail for boots.

- Height from the shelf or floor to whatever is above it
- Shoe height of your tallest footwear, which sets shelf spacing

Cut The Parts To Fit Your Space
Once the measurements are locked in, cut the side boards, shelves, and supports. HGTV’s approach cuts toe-rest boards to the closet shelf width minus the side-board width, so everything fits snugly between the sides. Drill pilot holes before driving wood screws to keep the boards from splitting.
A hanging rack built from plywood is another solid option. Kreg’s wall-mounted shoe-rack plan uses a single sheet of 3/4-inch plywood with narrow and wide cleats. Their fastener list is simple: #8 x 1 1/2-inch flat-head wood screws for the cleats and #8 x 2-inch flat-head wood screws to fasten the rack to the wall.
If you’d rather build a freestanding rack, the math changes slightly. Erin Spain’s DIY version uses three 1×12 boards cut to 50 inches for shelves, four 2×2 boards at 28 1/2 inches for the frame, and smaller 2×2 and 1×2 pieces at 12 inches for the legs and braces. Pocket holes and 1 1/4-inch pocket hole screws hold the frame together, and the shelves attach with 1 1/4-inch wood screws.
One more option worth noting: a single 4×8 sheet of plywood can be broken into three 30-inch pieces, then ripped into four 11 1/2-inch-wide strips, yielding enough material for 12 shelves. That’s an efficient layout if you’re building for a large collection.
Assemble, Finish, And Install The Rack
Assembly order stays consistent across most plans. Build the frame first, add the shelf supports, then set the shelves in place. Jen Woodhouse’s “super-sized” rack plan creates a slight shelf slope by marking 7 inches from the front and 9 inches from the back, which lets shoes lean naturally instead of sitting flat. Subsequent shelves sit 7 inches above the previous one.
After assembly, sand every edge and apply the finish of your choice. HGTV primes and paints before returning the rack to the closet. Kreg’s plan likewise calls for sanding all edges and finishing after assembly. A protective coat matters because shoes track in dirt and moisture.
For a wall-mounted rack, anchor it into a wall stud when possible. If no stud lines up, use wall anchors rated for drywall. Attaching directly to drywall without anchors is the fastest way to end up with a rack on the floor.

What Size Shoe Rack Do You Really Need?
Count your shoes honestly before you build. A 12-pair capacity demands more depth than a 6-pair rack, and the dimensions shift accordingly.
For most closets, a rack that holds between 12 and 20 pairs covers a typical household’s everyday rotation. Build in a little extra shelf space beyond your current count.
