Pick the spot first. Stand on the path and think about daily traffic. A tight arch looks cute until you’re carrying compost through it.

For a main walkway, aim for a clear opening of 42–48 inches. For a side path, 36 inches can work if you won’t roll a cart through. Measure the narrowest point on the approach and match the arch to it.
Height That Won’t Feel Low

Gravel Base And Backfill
Add 4–6 inches of gravel in the bottom and tamp it tight. Set the post, check plumb on two faces, and brace it with scrap boards to stakes. Backfill in layers, tamping each layer hard. If you use concrete, keep the mix thick so the post stays put while you plumb it.
Match The Second Post
Set the second post the same way, then measure the opening at the bottom and near the top. Adjust until both measurements match.

Making A Clean Curved Header
A curve looks graceful, yet it can sag if it’s thin. Laminating two matching arcs into one thick header keeps the top stiff.
Draw The Curve Full Size
On cardboard or plywood, mark your clear opening, then mark a rise of 12–18 inches at the center. Use a string and pencil to draw an even arc from one side to the other. Cut the template and check the shape against the posts before you cut lumber.
Cut Two Matching Layers
Clamp the two 2×8 boards together and cut them as a stack with a jigsaw. Sand the edge smooth. If you want a crisp edge, use a router to flush-trim after the rough cut.
Glue, Clamp, And Screw
Spread exterior wood glue between the layers, clamp tight, then add screws in a staggered pattern. Let it cure flat so it stays true.
Assembling The Arch Frame
With posts set and the header ready, you can build the frame fast.
Side Rails First
Set a rail 18–24 inches above grade on each side. These rails keep the posts from racking. Check level, then drive two structural screws at each end.
Fit And Fasten The Header
Lift the header onto the posts and center it. You can fasten it flat to the post tops, or cut shallow notches so the header sits down into the posts. Notches give a clean look and share load through wood-to-wood contact.
Use structural screws or carriage bolts with washers. Tighten, then check plumb again. If anything drifted, adjust now while the braces are still easy to move.
Add Braces When Needed
If you plan a heavy vine, add diagonal braces from posts to header. A pair of 2×4 braces with 45-degree ends can take the “spring” out of an arch right away.
Sealing And Finishing
Outdoor wood fails first at end grain and joints. Seal those spots and the arch will age far better.
Seal Each Fresh Cut
Brush end-grain sealer on post tops, notch cuts, and any exposed end grain on the header. Don’t skip bolt holes.
Choose A Finish

Getting Vines Started Without A Tangle

Add Wires Or Slats

Add a second matching arc beneath the first, glue and screw it in place, then seal the new edge. Laminated layers resist sag far better than a single board.
Seasonal Care
- Check bolts and screws each spring and snug them if the wood has dried and shrunk.
- Re-coat stain or sealer when water no longer beads on the surface.
- Trim vines so wet leaves don’t sit packed against joints for long stretches.
- Keep mulch a few inches away from wood posts so the base can dry after rain.
Once the frame is stiff and sealed, the arch becomes low-drama garden hardware. Then you can spend your time on planting and pruning, not on chasing wobble.
