Cut four legs from 4×4 posts. For a rim near 34 inches with a 12-inch-deep box, legs often land around 30 inches, though board thickness changes the final height. Dry-fit one leg under a corner and measure to be sure.
Attach short 2×4 stretchers between each pair of legs, 6–8 inches above the ground. Then connect the two end assemblies with the long stretchers. Pre-drill and drive long screws, or bolt the joints if you prefer.
Push the frame side to side. If it sways, add diagonal braces from leg to stretcher on at least two sides.
Step 5: Mount The Box To The Legs
Flip the box upside down. Center the leg frame on it and mark where each leg meets the box. Drive screws through the box frame into each leg. Use four screws per leg, spaced apart to avoid splits. Flip the unit upright and check that it sits flat.
Step 6: Line The Interior So Soil Stays Put
Staple garden fabric or a planter liner to the inside walls. Lay the same fabric over the bottom slats. Poke small holes over the slat gaps so water can exit.

Seasonal Care That Keeps The Bed In Shape
Once a season, check corners and stretchers and snug up any screws that backed out. Look for liner tears near the slat gaps and patch them with a stapled strip. Top-dress with compost, then mulch again.
