Google says the newer live capabilities cover more than 70 languages and began rolling out on August 26, 2025 to users in the U.S., India, and Mexico. Google describes the underlying models as advanced voice and speech recognition systems that isolate sounds and handle pauses, accents, and intonation — useful, but not magic in a crowded room.

Microsoft Translator’s Conversation Mode

Microsoft Translator approaches the same problem with real-time translated captions and a dedicated conversation view.

Microsoft’s app page says the app supports real-time, translated captions and can translate a live conversation directly from within the app. For one-on-one conversations on Android, Microsoft introduced an Auto mode in November 2020: you choose two languages, select auto, and the app listens for whichever language is being spoken without a mic button press on each turn.

Microsoft positions the conversation feature for situations like parent-teacher conferences and meetings, where both people need to follow the exchange without passing a phone back and forth. The consumer app also supports offline translation packs, which helps when you have no signal.

For most conversations, a modern phone with Google Translate or Microsoft Translator installed is enough — no separate hardware required.

Dedicated translator devices exist and can be handy for hands-free use or long meetings, but the free apps cover the common cases: travel, customer service, medical intake, and family conversations. Both Google and Microsoft offer their consumer translator apps without a stated separate price for the conversation feature in their official materials.
