Dehumidifiers pull excess moisture from the air, and choosing one safely means checking efficiency ratings and any recall history.

Dehumidifiers are self-contained appliances that remove moisture by condensing water on refrigerated coils, collecting the condensate, and disposing of it. They are a standard fix for damp basements, musty closets, and allergy seasons. Before you buy, there are three things to understand about them: how efficiency is measured, what to look for in a model, and why checking for recalls is non-negotiable. How Dehumidifier Efficiency Is Measured

Whole-home (ducted) units have their own thresholds based on case volume. Units with a case volume of 8.0 ft³ or less need at least 2.22 L/kWh, while larger units need at least 3.81 L/kWh. ENERGY STAR states that certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than non-certified models.

When comparing models, bigger is not automatically better. An oversized unit will cycle on and off more often, which can waste energy and leave the space feeling clammy. Match the pint capacity to the square footage and dampness level of the room, not to the biggest number on the shelf.

Are There Any Dehumidifier Recalls I Should Know About?

Yes — and this is the part buyers skip. Multiple dehumidifier recalls have involved overheating, smoke, fire, and burn hazards. The CPSC says consumers should stop using recalled units, unplug them, and contact the manufacturer for a remedy. Ignoring a recall notice is a fire risk, not a paperwork issue.

The largest current named recall on the CPSC site covers Gree dehumidifiers. Announced August 16, 2023, that recall covers 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, 65, and 70-pint models made by Gree Electric Appliances. The affected brand names include Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, GE, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir, and SuperClima.

Another significant recall involved Midea dehumidifiers. Those recalled units were 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70, and 75-pint models sold under many brand names. The brand name, model number, pint capacity, and manufacture date are printed on the nameplate sticker on the back of each unit. For that recall, consumers were told to turn off and unplug affected units and contact the company for a replacement unit or partial refund.

How Do I Use A Dehumidifier Safely?

Check your unit against the CPSC dehumidifier recall list before you plug it in. If your model is listed, unplug it immediately and follow the manufacturer’s remedy instructions. If the nameplate sticker is missing or worn off, search the brand and model number online to confirm its status.

For safe daily use, Most units have a digital display or dial that lets you pick a target humidity. Once the room hits that level, the unit cycles off automatically. In a basement, 50% is a common target; if you see condensation on windows or pipes, nudge the setting down.

You should also empty the condensate bucket regularly, or connect a drain hose if your unit supports one. Keep the air filter clean — a clogged filter restricts airflow and forces the compressor to work harder. Finally, never leave a recalled or visibly damaged unit running unattended.

What’s The Right Capacity For My Space?

Capacity matters more than price in most cases. A unit that’s too small runs constantly and never catches up; a unit that’s too large short-cycles and wastes energy. As a rule of thumb, a space up to 500 square feet with moderate dampness typically needs a 20–30 pint unit. Larger basements or seriously wet rooms push that up to 50–70 pints.

If you’re shopping for a small space or a tight budget, there are solid options that balance cost and performance. Just remember that “cheap” should never mean skipping the ENERGY STAR label or skipping the recall check.

That number is a useful capacity ceiling if you’re looking at older spec sheets or used units, but current certification follows the Version 6.0 thresholds.
